Seriously-this budget will destroy us. Meanwhile, Obama is alienating our allies, (Britain and France, so far), ignoring our enemies, (North Korea-Hilary says there will be 'consequences"-what are they? She'll report them to the UN! And what, they won't be invited to the next wine and cheese party?),and threatening to nationalize any business he deems worth nationalizing.

Almost half, (47%) of us voted against Obama. More than half now have no faith in his foreign policy, (44% in Rasmussen's latest poll). Only 44% support his budget.

Any of that explain to you Obama supporters why the Democrats are against his budget?

Okay folks -- political bias and sarcasm aside for this post -- I have asked colleagues I work with (conservatives and liberals both) to logically close the cycle on Obama's budget plan. So far the scoreboard is still zero. Any practical and logical insight would be appreciated (which means I probably don't want to hear from folks like "In [fill-in-the-blank with a liberal answer] we Trust/Bust" Eric from Salinas; Diane from Illinois; or Bev from Chicago -- these folks (and those with similar minds) need serious help with human courtesies on their posts, and I'm looking for productive and civilized responses to my question].

Here is the question: Apart from borrowing money from foreign powers through sales of securities and distributing that money to create jobs internally -- with little or no expectation that the money spent will result in long-term solutions to our economic problems -- how is this plan a good one? I understand that it will give people jobs (albeit temporarily) until the money is gone, but the idea in a real economic solution should be to eventually produce something that foreign nations are willing to buy -- hence giving our country a return on the originally borrowed investment. That's how any real business must operate to survive -- and while our government is a different kind of business, I think we all could agree that wasteful spending should not be our goal -- especially with borrowed money. I do think that spending on infrastructure and local developments have the capacity to help with the actual goal (i.e. economic recovery) -- but they don't accomplish the goal alone -- and forking out money to needy groups/individuals brings them temporary relief (and don't get me wrong, it's good to give help when you can afford to -- and that last part is the operative part 'when you can afford to' -- if our country borrows to give away, it really can't 'afford to' -- and yes, that goes for the Bush war years as well -- though I suspect there was/are hopes of an oil return on that investment, which hardly supports the idea of having military lives lost in order to get it), but it contributes little to nothing in achieving the goal of economic recovery. I haven't heard any concrete ideas on how those infrastructure investments or dole programs are going to bring a net return (i.e. bringing dollars back home from the foreign powers that lent us the money in the first place). Borrowing money and distributing it to the masses is a short-term fix that leaves you with bigger problems when it is gone, unless there is a bigger plan beyond it -- that's the same problem we have with people using credit as though it was additional free income. Eventually, you have to pay the piper; and if you can't, then your toast (this would be equivalent to the Chinese and other countries deciding to completely dump our dollar -- making it practically worthless). So, how is this a good plan to bring about economic recovery? If the plan is to feed the masses with a blind hope that industry will create something during the stimulus payout period -- then we need a planner with better vision, for this is nothing more than Vegas-style gambling that puts a limit on how much you can win (i.e. taxes that poison interest in business development) with no controls on how much you can lose (risking the very foundation of our entire economy) -- and that kind of a "change" is really not the kind we want.

Does anyone know if there is something hidden in the details of Obama's plan that develops a new technology or other development that we will be able to sell overseas or across our land borders that could rival the automobile 50 years ago? If not, then I must conclude that this plan will only make things worse by digging a (much) bigger economic hole.

Any honestly productive (i.e. non-polarized) answers to this are appreciated.

Organizing for America. 10 to 1 says that the backers of these ads are government employee unions, school teachers unions and other private enterprise unions. Only 12.5 % of the US workforce is unionized and excluding government workers only 7.5% of the private sector is unionized.Obama and the Dems do not give a damn about non unionized workers, just looked at the "stimulus plan". They only support the unions because they give Dems 75 % of the money and non cash contributions dems receive in campaign donations. When will america wake up to the fact that unions (particularly government employee unions) are the enemies of the american people. Unions add only one thing to a product and that is cost. That's it. Unionized workers make americans pay more for everything unions are involved in. Unions extract money from your pockets to line their pockets whether through higher prices or higher taxes. I didn't say Clinton did everything right and that Clinton has no blame in this as well. He certainly does. But Bush had him CORNERED after 9/11, after "wanted dead or alive," after "we'll follow him to the gates of hell" and chose to let him go. All I'm saying is that it's an absurd question to ask when Obama will get Bin Laden but ignore the fact that we could have gotten him under Bush but chose not to.

California has 0% property taxes. Thanks Governor Ronald Reagan. With no property taxes, the entire state's budget comes from income and sales tax. When people lose their jobs, the income tax goes away and they can't shop so the sales tax goes away. Do some research.

Speaking of research, Michigan and California are in the top 3 states for unemployment (largely because MI is the home of the auto industry and CA is the home of the tech bubble that burst), but there are 11 states worse off than IL (including SC and AK), and NY is actually ranked 25, right in the middle. Way to make up some figures, though.

There was a record number of filibusters in the last 2 years. The rate nearly tripled. Good luck getting anything passed when the senate filibusters every plan a Democrat offers. And the one good thing that did get passed (SCHIP) got vetoed anyway. The Democrats tried over and over to get a timeline for Iraq passed but every time, it was filibustered.

Great question! Long, but great! :)

Here is what I think:

A large part of our current expenses in both state and federal government is health care through programs like Medicare and Medicaid.

Also, everytime an uninsured person requires health care and cannot pay, those cost for those who are insured goes up to pay for it.

If President Obama is able to develop a health insurance plan that:

- Provides AFFORDABLE access to all Americans. If you can afford to pay for care, you get a better price. If you can't afford to pay, you are not denied care.

- Provides care that is not tied to your current employment status, so that losing a job doesn't lead to catastrophic debt just to stay alive.

-Provide PREVENTIVE CARE so some of these conditions can be corrected before they become chronic

- Reduces cost through the increased efficiency by modernizing medical records and streamlining the redundancy of so many competing plans and interests in the current market.

Then much of the money we are ALREADY SPENDING on Health care will be spent more effectively, and in the long run result in SAVINGS in the budget.

But it takes START UP money to get things going. Just because it costs a lot to start doesn't mean that it will cost that same amount for ever, just like with any other new business enterprise.

That is why President Obama is so insistent that reforming health care is the KEY to this whole process, not just the cherry on the top.

P.S. Then of course, ending the Iraq War will save us 10 BILLION DOLLARS A MONTH.

I couldn't agree with you more.

What's worse is that the adoption/research into green energy sources will actually make the country less competitive as it will have to compete with cheaper foreign competition using fossil fuels. You can really see the Chinese and Indians lining up to buy some wind farms.

Also, with the decimation of the financial industry one of the top earners of foreign currency has taken a hit so now the trade deficient is also likely to rise.

To ask the simple question, what goods and services are we going to sell around the world to pay for education, healthcare, green energy and the trillions of debt?

BTW. I was against the war in Iraq, the Bush tax cuts and most of the increased spending of the Bush administration.

Many people are right on the edge of losing everything. Note the number of foreclosures in the last year. Tax those people another $100 a month, and you'll get another round of foreclosures.

Why does government never sacrifice? Why does government always vote itself a raise? Why does government believe it can spend your money better then you can?

Maybe you should think about some of these things once on a while.

Starting to find it kind of sad, the so-called conservatives posting here.

Yell, yell, yell. Make stuff up. make huge issues out of tiny ones. NEVER use your name, ever. (Seems like with their strong feelings about Obama, that they would have the COURAGE to match their convictions) and generally say the same thing over and over and over........

Something like this:

Obama is ruining our country!
Obama is a foreign policy disaster!
Obama (insert some lie about his positions)
The classic: Where’s the BC?
Obama is a socialist (see how that's spelled?)
/Marxist/communist!
No regard for market stabilization, increased wholesale orders, dialog with enemies (at least we're talking now), or a generally hopeful feeling by the American populace.

All the name calling, accusations, and lies are becoming really tiresome.

All they do is criticize. Never debate. Debate assumes there are two opposing ideas; they don't have any. All they know is Obama is WRONG. It's like they devote all of their time desperately, desperately trying to convince people to change their minds. We are beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel (I know there's still ALOT to work through) So thanks, but no thanks, I'll stick with the guy that has more of a plan then, "Don't follow that guy!", 'cause that's not really a plan.

And now my questions:

What's wrong with ensuring that every American has health insurance, scratch that, Health Coverage? It may cost you a bit in taxes, but you will see lower rates (more competition), and lowered base causes (no-more emergency room insurance, more preventative services)

What's wrong with expecting more out of the public educational system? It is badly degrading.

And why should we not develop Clean Energy? even assuming that global warming is a hoax, who wants to live in a city where you have "Smog alerts"? And how long will you keep paying premium prices at the pump?

One last question: Why do 6 out of ten anonymous right wing posters have either the word "Moon" or "Dog" in their moniker? Did I miss a joke?

Greg in WA - I'm not sure your really open to the answer because it is sort of obvious for you to not already be aware of it, but here goes. How Stimulus works - Yes it is true that many of the Stimulus jobs will not be permanent. They don't need to be. Those jobs and expanded unumployment benefits stimulate lagging demand for many other products. Industrial materials that go into the actual infrastructure and consumer products. All of this has a multiplying effect on keeping or creating more jobs which then creates more demand, and the cycle repeats. And that is how you turn around the lagging economy that was put into a negative cycle by some event (in this case the Housing bubble bust). If you stimulate too much the economy can actually overheat, which is probably why Obama didn't spend as much as many Economist would like. In 2 years, many of those people who got jobs working on Infrastructure can return to their regular jobs. Like building Houses and all of the other jobs they were displaced from due to the previous decline in Demand. Beyond even that, Obama did put Investments into sustainable long-term jobs in the stimuls. Just the beginning steps to improve healthcare technology (which will improve America's ability to compete, with reduced healthcare costs). He also starting funneling money into Green technology and education. His proposed Budget follows up with more investment in these 3 areas which are what he sees as Americans opportunity to compete better over the long-run in the World Economy. For the GOP, they see the past 8 years as economically a good time. But the reality is that gains in the market came from unsustainable and false sources. I mean only so many jobs can be outsourced to other countries to cut costs. Housing prices can be artificially inflated only so much. Tax Cuts for the rich, while we run big deficits to pay War contractors with little to nothing permanent to show for that deficit spending. Yes Obama wants to spend some money we don't have. The difference is that we will have things to show for the money he is asking for. Like the kind of growth in the future that it is going to take to pay back the debt not only on his investments, but all the other wasteful things we have spent money on in the past. Yes, he is asking the wealthiest to pay a little more. But the real plan is to cut the debt through growth in GDP. And the world is going to help finance this, because at this point in time they still need the US to keep being us. Leaders and consumers

Democrats would be well-served to remember that, ultimately, power in Washington, D.C. is fleeting and stop with the message that anyone who disagrees with Obama is a "nutcase" and using the excuse that America voted for "change." I mean, Republicans could make the same argument with the election of George Bush in 2000, and my guess is that Democrats will be the minority party in Congress by 2012. And this is coming from a Democrat (more specifically an HRC supporter from way back in the day). The reason? Democrats (especially wack-job Nancy Pelosi) are parading around acting like they should get whatever they want and turning their backs on Obama's campaign promise of biparisanship and a "new America." You guys sit there and act like it's such a great thing that we're going to like quadruple our national debt and create new entitlement programs that will never be taken away (entitlement programs are notoriously hard to do away with) at a time when excess borrowing on the individual and corporate level got us to this point. It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. And none of these things are going to be able to e paid for by taxing the wealthy to death, and there's no reason why you guys should want to punish them for success. Guess what, geniuses...you tax the crap out of the wealthy and corporations and that just means that the prices you pay for consumer items go up and essentially, you're bearing the brunt of the tax increase. And, on top of all of that, the wealthy have less discretionary income to contribute to charitable organizations that provide essential services to those in need. I don't understand why you equate being wealthy with being evil, and I don't understand why being wealthy inherently means that you are responsible for providing money and/or services to the poor. I think people should do that on their own, as opposed to being forced into it by the government. I mean, I am completely against government legislating morality (i.e., I don't think the government should be able to tell people that they are "wrong" for being in a same-sex relationship and I think that we should absolutely defend the separation of church and state). Well, if you think about it, taxing the rich to pay for services for the poor is essentially telling them they have a moral obligation to help those less fortunate and instead of leaving it up to the individual, the government is coming in and forcing their conception of morality in this area on the upper class. It shouldn't be ok for one thing and not ok for the other. Perhaps we should provide more and better tax incentives for the wealthy to encourage them to donate to charitable causes as opposed to forcing them to do so through the tax code?

Just watched a video from Media Matters regarding how you in media take such marching orders from Drudge. If you look back to the "source" for so many smears, political media echo chambers, etc. - bet you will find the hack Drudge at the center of that universe. When will MSNBC stop using Drudge as a reference point? He is a GOP operative just like Jonathan Martin and the Politico crowd. It has been written about that Politico's staff has a strong relationship with Karl Rove. What journalistic integrity would be valuable there? Looking for some higher ground in the traditional media. Haven't found it yet except for Keith and Rachel. Isn't it sad the Jon Stewart uses more research and speaks more truth than the networks. Stop all the gotcha journalism with Obama. The American public is exhausted by your effort. Where was all this investigative fervor when Bush was raping the Constitution?

I see the right wing nuts are out in force today. Don't you guys have jobs? I thought you were all hard working do it on your own types. So why are you worried. You're working and making a good living, right? You listen to nut bags on the radio and TV and aren't bright enough to dismiss the hate filled garbage they spew. Losing isn't fun but lashing out by calling your opponents Fascists or Nazis or even Communist or Socialist shows your own lack of knowledge and history. The more you people do this the stupider you look. So keep it up. Just like during the campaign the more you attack Obama the stronger he gets so bring it on.

People talk about leadership. When was the last time we had a true leader in the White House? Certainly not for the last 8 years and before that one needs to go back a ways too.

Funny how all these people complain but offer no alternative. They have no solution. Thus they have no credibility. If the "loyal opposition" comes up with a workable solution different from what President Obama and the Democrats are proposing than they will have credibility, show they are willing to work for the people and not just be obstructionists, saying no, no, no, and only party oriented while the nation and our people go to hell in a handbasket. Let's hear your alternative or shut up. I am so sick and tired of the whining and carping just to whine and carp. If I want to hear that I'll teach kindergarten.

Actually, Brian, California has a 1-1/2% property tax, I know, I pay it every year. That being said, it's very clearly too low, due to Prop 13, to keep up with the demands of education & healthcare.

But we can thank Ronald Reagan for all of the tent-cities that we see under freeway overpasses, in the parks and on our streets everyday. And it's not just due to the current economic downturn, it's been this way for years. The homeless population in my state is, in MHO, one of the more shameful stains on our nation and culture. Many, many of those homeless are vets from Viet Nam and the middle east. Many, many of those homeless vets are suffering from PTSD or a whole host of other mental and physical disorders. Thanks to Reagan, we have no state hospitals that care for these individuals. Yes, there's the VA, but if you make too much money, or have any other coverage, you can't use their services. And that doesn't even count for the thousands of physically and/or mentally challenged homeless that are not vets.

Where is our compassion?? Where is our empathy?? Where is our humanitarianism?? If the GOP base is so stuck on the idea that we cannot use a decade old, fertilized egg that has been in the deep freeze for years, that will never be implanted into a woman's uterus, and therefore never become a baby, to advance science, simply because it would be murder in their eyes, where is all of this "God given compassion for those who have already been born and given of themselves to this great country?? The hypocrisy is astounding to me.
