I say this with the hope that Minnesota and the country is mad as heck that he does not have the integrity of stones to do what is right by Franken and the state. He, Coleman, and the GOP can kiss their chances goodby for winning in Minnesota's elections for a long time. They have caused the electorate undue embarassment and delay of a second representative. I use to live in Minneapolis, loved the city and it's people and I really do feel sorry for the residents of the state.

Money is tight enough for every state and to think that he is holding out on a pipe dream just for the sake of the party he represents is disgraceful. I do pray that the Minnesota Supreme Court denies the request of Norm Coleman and do the right thing for the citizens. You all need to be represented. Taxation without representation is not a good thing.

I'm no Pawlenty fan but your post makes no sense, and is factually inaccurate! Senator Wellstone's plane tragically crashed less than 2 weeks before the general election. Coleman was already the GOP candidate, whether Pawlenty had wanted the seat once Senator Wellstone died is meaningless, and Karl Rove did not stop Pawlenty from getting involved, because there was no way Pawlenty could get involved, unless you're claiming Pawlenty used to be a Democrat, and wanted to run as the Democratic candidate. However that never happened, and had it Karl Rove wouldn't have been the one to say no Pawlenty you aren't going to be the Democratic nominee, that would have been the Minnesota DFL party leaders. If Pawlenty wanted to run in 2002, he would have had to run against Coleman in the primary many months before Paul Wellstone's tragic death. Karl Rove, et al had nothing to do with this race, or at least nothing to do with who was the GOP nominee after the Minnesota primary.

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) introduced legislation in the Senate Thursday which would allow homeowners in bankruptcy to renegotiate -- or cramdown -- mortgages with banks. His corresponding amendment to the House-passed bankruptcy reform bill is scheduled to be voted on at 2:30. (Read the whole thing.)

The measure is widely expected to fail, as crucial Democratic senators, whose votes are needed to overcome a filibuster, have publicly declared their opposition.

Democratic Sens. Ben Nelson (Neb.), Mary Landrieu (La.) and Jon Tester have indicated they plan to vote against the amendment. Sen. Evan Bayh (D-Ind.), who supported the bill last time around, expressed reluctance to back it this time. The banking industry has lobbied relentlessly against the reform.

On Monday night, Durbin concluded that the banks "frankly own the place."

The place came (relatively) cheap.

The banking and real estate industry has funneled roughly $2,000,000 into Landrieu's campaign coffers over her 12-year career, according to data from the Center for Responsive Politics. Bayh has taken in about $3.5 million. The financial sector is Nelson's biggest backer; he's taken $1.4 million from banks and real estate interests and another $1.2 million from insurance firms. Tester has fielded roughly half a million in his two years in office.

That's about nine million dollars -- far, far less than one percent of the amount taxpayers have spent to bail out the financial industry.

The opponents of the bill all say that industry influence is not the reason they'll vote against the measure. Rather, they claim genuine policy disagreements: concerns it could raise interest rates or increase defaults, for instance.

But Durbin's amendment is very narrowly tailored and would only allow mortgages signed before Jan. 1 to be modified -- meaning that interest rates on future loans should be unaffected.

We'll be watching the roll call and will post the rest of the no votes along with their take from the financial industry.

Durbin's office has also calculated, relying on data from the Center for Responsible Lending and Moody's, how many homes his bill would save and how much home equity it would preserve by preventing foreclosures, which damage entire neighborhoods.

Landrieu's Louisiana could see 12,651 homes and $500 million of equity preserved. Tester's Montana: 2,815 and $40 million. Nelson's Nebraska: 3,763 and $140 million. Bayh's Indiana: 27,960 homes and $590 million.

Did anyone see President Obama at last night's press conference? I understand he can't speak without teleprompters, so he must have done a heck of a job hiding the prompters and programing the answers before the questions were asked. He even had Helen Thomas laughing which scared me because that lady reminds me of a nun during detention.
Al, we need your sense of humor in the senate chambers. We need your vote when a new Supreme Justice is appointed. If there was an uproar over Sebelius being pro choice, just think about the proverbial poo poo on the fan when Souter or Ginsberg steps down. Hopefully the ladies from Maine will show up if needed.

I love the Republican claim that Al Franken is a "failed comedian." The man has won multiple Emmys for comedy writing, was a powerful player on Saturday Night Live for many years, and wrote a New York Times bestseller. There are very few comedians in the world who have had *more* success than this at what they do.

Perhaps instead of disparaging the career of someone who is successful by any reasonable measure, Republicans should look in the mirror and try to figure out why one of their flagbearers for the last year has been a guy who claimed to be a plumber but couldn't even get a plumbing license.
