I made a mistake!

Stumbling on MTP I watched David Gregory for maybe 10 minutes. One would think once you reach the level of moderating a national political program, you would have learned a few lessons along the way. Not so with the king of gotcha. So although presumptive on my part, here are three reasons why “gotcha” does not work.

1. Politicians are quick to recognize “Gotcha” and they have had plenty of practice redirecting answers to suit their purpose.
2. The interviewer wants to look smart, insightful, cleaver, but it is not about the interviewer.
3. Instead of focusing on the political issues, the observer focuses on the contest between the interviewer and the politician. The interviewer always loses.

Lots of news about 2012 as well over the week-end, as the DNC got its primary review commission under way to discuss things like superdelegates, the front-loaded calendar, problems in the caucuses. What's ironic with that, of course, is that whatever the GOP does is going to be much more important since Democrats won't have a competitive primary in '12, but they are definitely tons of very important issues both parties should urgently reform.

Here's the Sotomayor deal, for today at least. The SC will reverse the ruling she helped make and for 24 hours the media will hash and re-hash the idea, spawned by her opponents, that she's not ready for prime time because her side of the ruling was struck down.

And yet, several members of the Supreme Court will vote to support Sotomayor's ruling. This idea will reeive little or no mention. The fallacy the media will love to hype, today at least, is that a federal judge must rule in compliance with the majority of the SC in order to be considered for that august body.
Clearly this is wrong-headed, but to place that idea onto the scales of the argument in favor of Sotomayor's confirmation doesn't make for 'sexy' reporting.

If Michael Jackson's death can banish Iran, Energy, and Health Reform from the nightly news (nice work, NBC--not), then the travesty of reporting on Sotomayor should come as no surprise to anyone. I sure hope that the Minnesota Supreme Court gets with it and hands down a ruling that will finally allow Senator Al Franken to take his rightful seat in the Senate. I sure can't wait to hear his comments once he's seated. Good that Pawlenty has decided to follow the law and accept the SC's ruling.

I'm not sure I like the two hour Morning Meeting so soon after the Mourning Jerk. Too bad there isn't as news hour between shows as I'm on the left coast and at 6AM I'm ready for the daily news instead of a meeting. I do however like Dylan Ratigan's Liberal take on business. About time we have some sane honest business commentary about getting good regulations in place to keep the Wall Street Criminals from ripping us all off. Good to hear someone saying that Ponzi Madoff should spend the rest of his life in prison.

Really pathetic how the media went bonkers about the death of Michael Jackson. I'll be glad when the media gets back to work on giving us the real news that actually means something. I wonder if MJ had a t-shirt in his closet that says "He who dies with the most Debt Wins!"?

The first half of 2009 on Capitol Hill has seen Congress focus the bulk of its attention on the economy, the budget, health care and energy. And while those last two are still very much on the front burner, Roll Call reports today that the second half of the year will likely feature more work on domestic social issues, most notably on gay rights.

...House Democratic leaders are starting to show signs that they are now ready to push key aspects of the gay rights agenda.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and her leadership team met privately last week with Reps. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) and Jared Polis (D-Colo.) -- the three openly gay Members of Congress -- to chart a strategy for advancing gay rights issues this Congress.

Sources in the meeting said Members discussed workplace discrimination, health care benefits for same-sex partners of federal employees, and a repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." Lawmakers also discussed how to help the Senate pass hate crimes legislation that has already cleared the House and the possibility of rolling workplace discrimination and federal health benefits into one bill.

House Armed Services Chairman Ike Skelton (D-Mo.), the original sponsor of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, has also agreed to hold hearings, revisiting the issue 16 years later.

The second half of the year is also likely to include a renewed debate over immigration reform, as evidenced by a meeting last week among key lawmakers plotting a legislative strategy. Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) left feeling "very optimistic"; Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) described the meeting as "a real shot in the arm." Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is committed to tackling immigration reform this year, and Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chairwoman Nydia Velazquez (D-N.Y.) sounded encouraged by the prospects.

The newest CBO report notes that, by 2023, Obama's debt to gdp ratio will be 200%.

Read the report-you cannot go blindly following this Pied Piper of debt as he takes this country over a cliff, however much you may want to. The report is on-line, easy to access, and not difficult to read. In fact, on Friday, the report itself, and remarks from the committee, were on the front page of the Washington Post. First Read didn't notice.

For those who confuse the terms 'debt' and deficit'-I'll make it easy:

If you have a home with a $300,000 mortgage balance, a car with a $25,000 outstanding loan, and $10,000 of credit card debt, your total DEBT is $335,000. That, of course, is without interest-that is the total debt you owe.

If your monthly take-home income is $5000, and your mortgage payment, including tax and insurance, is $3000, your car payment is $500, credit card payments $500, utilities, insurance $500, groceries and gas $1000, you have a monthly DEFICIT of $500. You will likely cover it by adding to your credit card debt, increasing your total DEBT.

You can sustain this situation for just so long before your credit cards are maxxed out and you can no longer borrow to sustain your lifestyle. That is what Obama is doing to this country.

In the World War II era, total DEBT equalled 40% of GDP-and it was money we owed ourselves. Americans buying war bonds were the holders of those notes.

Today, a greater percentage of the debt is held by foreign governments. They buy these bonds because of their security and return-the same reason bonds are given for births, graduations, etc. However, Once the debt to gdp ratio becomes too great, interest rates will soar, due to the risk involved in having such a huge amount of debt.

Obama has his own reality, and in it, there is a perfect world that only he can create. Unfortunately for those of us who live in the real world, his 'perfection' is going to cause great destruction.

It seems all too easy for many of you to be intellectually lazy, and just continue to cheerlead for him. I hope that at least some of you will start reading, doing the math, and helping to stop this train wreck for the sake of our country.

It's already 15% in Michigan and Oregon. California isn't too far behind. No one with any brains sees any of it getting better any time soon. 15% national unemployment is a real possibility. 20% would be an absoulte catastrophe, but is also possible.

Many government workers will get the axe this week - many states budgets must be in place and balanced by the end of the week, and most won't be. That should add 2-3 percentage to the unemployment lists.

PS. You must have been on vacation the past couple of weeks, because I don't have any problem 'speaking truth' to Obama. He's going to have to pull a better 'message discipline' to keep my support. But don't kid yourself, I don't regret my vote - the 'alternative' was not a viable option at all. None of you Repubs have even attempted to grapple with what Bomber McCain would have done differently. He is not what you call a 'critical thinker', so I can only assume his Bomb, Bomb, Bomb Bomb Iran was a nervous tick that may have resulted in a certain 'red' button being pushed. That's assuming he hadn't crapped his depends by now and Palin (G-d help us) was running the show. I'm still going to go with the smart guy - even if I think he is 'weak' on civil rights issues.

Yesterday, for the first in many months I watched MTP mainly because I wanted to hear David Axelrod, whom I admire a lot. It will, however, be the last time as I was angered by David Gregory and his rude manner of 'interviewing', interrupting and bullying his guest.

Later it was obvious, the difference in tone when talking to Mitt Romney and Sen Lindsey Graham. Please MSNBC get someone else to do this show...Laurence O'Donnell, Rachel Maddow or Erin Burnett. You have lost a lot of viewers by having DG as the host.

I finished Renegade about two weeks ago, it was a very good read and gives one a better understanding of how our President thinks and acts. We will be alright, our country is in good hands.

President Obama: Forget bipartisanship. The right will fight you on everything and then will say you never tried to work with them. Get the 60 we need, or the 51 we need, and pass our agenda. That's what we hired you for. And though you wanted to change the tone in Washington, you have seen that the skunks on the right are coy enough to get an invite to the WH, but then complain that you fed them chicken and not steak. Or if you fed them steak, complain you were trying to kill them by feeding them red meat. They NEVER had any intention of working with you, and the only way to change that is to have the Republicans who love this country elect moderate and progressive Republicans who are willing to compromise! With the likes of Congressman Coppertone and Turtlehead McConnell, nothing will ever get done on a bipartisan basis. I will personally be working to get rid of Can'tor in Richmond though I live in No VA. We are headed mid-left, and just in time to save this great country of ours!

I see the children are playing today. All the hate mongers are in fine form today. It's probably some unemployed con sitting in a basement somewhere mad at the world. Pathetic but somewhat humerous in the outrageous statements come from such people as these.

Small dogs such as chihuahuas think they are big dogs but in the end they end up being dinner for the big dogs.

I agree that way, way , way too much has been made in the MSM about Michael Jackson. While I have enjoyed SOME of his music I don't consider myself much of a MJ fan. Have you ever noticed that celebrities seem do drop like flys in 3s. Most recent, of course besides Jackson are pitchman Billy Mays and Farrah Fawcet. Ed McMahon was with "grasshopper" and I forget who the other one was. Anyway it is uncanny how they all seem to go in 3s.

I used to religiously watch Meet The Press but no more. I can't stand David Gregory. I just keep the TV off.

Since a general who is THERE says Iraq is ready for us to pull out I suggest it must be so. We can't continue to perpetuate that money wasting boondoggle any longer. I suggest we buy US Savings bonds, use the money to pay off China. At least we will owe money to Americans not COMMUNIST Chinese. While we're at it bring our jobs back too.

Change is always difficult but it must happen. Without change we would still be marvelling at the possiblity of making fire or going beyond a flint tipped spear to get dinner ready. In the past we endured the loss of buggies and buggy whips as we moved into the 20th Century and now we must change from petrolium (fossil fuels) based energy sources to clean, sustainable, renewable, home grown energy. If not now, when? When it is too late? When all the fossil fuel has either so polluted our planet we will be either dead or very sick? Will it be when there is no fossil fuel left and then shut down everything and act surprised that we have to do that?

Do poor people have a right to live free and pursue the happiness we all want? If they are constantly battling illness and can't afford to go for medical help or for medications that will help them sustain life, regardless how meager it is must they suffer?
Many who claim to be Christians allow fellow humans to suffer in this way and they who behave like that are hypocrites. When the reach the "pearly gates" may well be turned away. Next step be fitted for the right size pitch fork and tail.

While we do need Congress and the President to multi-task there are some issues that may simply need to be put off for later. Gay issues, people aren't dying by delaying these and perhaps some immigration issues (what's a few more months of what has been going on for decades?) may have to wait until we get environmental and health care issues resolved first.

The fear mongers are and will continue to be out in force because change is difficult. They are always out to say nay to any and all changes. We'll drag them kicking and screaming into the 21st Century whether they like it or not.

I agree with Feisty & Cindy, David Gregory has to be replaced on Meet The Press. Yesterday's interview with David Axelrod was painful to watch. David just does not get it, the role of a moderator is to ask a question then allow the guest to answer. At one point in the interview they were talking over each other. David does not know when to shut up, he constantly interrupted Mr Axelrod and that is a sign that David thinks he is more important than the guest. If he has not learned his role as a moderator after all the time he has been on Meet The Press then it is time for him to go. I also believe he is a vain, undisciplined person. Joe Scarborough was scheduled to appear on "This Week" with George Stephenopolus and when David heard about it, he threw a hissy fit and the appearance was cancelled.
